Ohioans, you have the power to end gerrymandering in your state this November.
Issue 1 is a proposed constitutional amendment that would create an independent, nonpartisan commission to draw Ohio's state legislative districts.Currently, the Ohio State Legislature is responsible for drawing its own districts, which has led to extreme gerrymandering in the state. Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing electoral districts to give one political party an unfair advantage over the other.
Issue 1 would end this practice by creating a commission made up of 12 citizens, with five Republicans, five Democrats, and two independents. The commission would be responsible for drawing the state's legislative districts, and its maps would be subject to approval by the Ohio Supreme Court.
This is a common-sense reform that would make Ohio's elections fairer and more competitive. Nonpartisan redistricting commissions are already in place in several states, and they have been shown to reduce gerrymandering and increase the number of competitive elections.
If you want to end gerrymandering in Ohio, and you want a more fair and representative state government, you should vote yes on Issue 1 this November.Don't let the politicians gerrymander themselves into power again. Vote yes on Issue 1 this November and help create a fairer Ohio.
