It happened to me: 3 tips to safely escalate when things get uncomfortable

I went on my first solo trip five years ago. I was 22, fresh out of university, and ready to take on the world. I had always dreamed of traveling, and I decided to start with Southeast Asia. I spent two weeks backpacking through Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and I had an amazing time. But there were a few times when I felt uncomfortable, and I had to escalate the situation in order to feel safe. Here are three tips that I learned from those experiences:
  • Trust your gut.
  • If something feels wrong, it probably is. Don't ignore your instincts. If you're feeling uncomfortable, it's okay to remove yourself from the situation.
  • Be assertive.
  • If you're feeling uncomfortable, don't be afraid to speak up. Let the other person know that you're not okay with what's happening. You don't have to be rude, but you should be clear and direct.
  • Get help.
  • If you're in a situation where you feel unsafe, don't hesitate to get help. Talk to a hotel staff member, a tour guide, or a member of the local police. There are people who are there to help you, and you shouldn't be afraid to ask for it.
I'm sharing these tips because I want other women to feel safe when they're traveling. I know that it can be scary to be alone in a new place, but it's important to remember that you're not alone. There are people who care about you, and there are people who are there to help you. If you ever feel uncomfortable, don't hesitate to speak up. Trust your gut, be assertive, and get help. You deserve to feel safe, no matter where you are in the world.
