Growing up in Ottawa, Flaherty's passion for performing was evident from an early age. As a young man, he cut his teeth in theater, honing his skills in everything from Shakespeare to absurdist comedy.
The SCTV Years
Flaherty's big break came when he joined "SCTV" in 1981. The show became a sensation, catapulting Flaherty and his castmates to stardom. Flaherty's versatility shone through as he effortlessly transformed into a vast array of characters, from the sleazy used car salesman, Guido the Killer Pimp, to the dim-witted Mayor Tommy Shanks.
"His ability to create so many different characters was mind-blowing," recalls fellow "SCTV" cast member Andrea Martin. "He could play anything from a stuffy politician to a bumbling clown with equal aplomb."
Beyond SCTV
After "SCTV" ended its run, Flaherty continued to showcase his comedic talents in numerous films and television shows. He starred alongside Chevy Chase in the cult classic "Fletch" and appeared in hit movies like "The Producers" and "The Other Guys."
On the small screen, Flaherty has been a regular on shows such as "Corner Gas" and "The Mindy Project." His infectious laugh and endearing presence have made him a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
More Than Just a Comedian
Flaherty's contributions to comedy extend beyond his performances. He has also been a writer, director, and producer, working on projects such as the Emmy-nominated animated series "The Looney Tunes Show."
