John McCain: The Maverick

John Sidney McCain III was an American politician and United States Navy officer who served as a United States senator for Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018. He was a member of the Republican Party and was the party's nominee for president of the United States in the 2008 election, which he lost to Barack Obama.
McCain was born in Panama, where his father was serving in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and served as a naval aviator during the Vietnam War. He was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and spent five and a half years as a prisoner of war.
After his release from prison, McCain returned to the United States and worked as a Navy lobbyist. He entered politics in 1982, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona's 1st congressional district. He served in the House for four years before being elected to the Senate in 1986.
McCain was a prominent critic of the Vietnam War and of President George W. Bush's foreign policy. He was also a leading advocate for campaign finance reform and ethics in government. In 2008, he was the Republican nominee for president, but he lost to Barack Obama.
McCain was a controversial figure throughout his career. He was criticized by some for his hawkish views on foreign policy, while others praised him for his independence and his willingness to speak his mind. He was a respected figure in both parties, and his death in 2018 was mourned by people from all walks of life.
