This map of the world's sea level trends provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) paints a clear picture upon how if trends continue, the world will be in trouble as some of the places with the biggest rises in sea level are already under the sea level.
The Greenhouse Effect, which scientists think is one of the leading causes for polar ice caps melting and therefore rising sea levels, is a process by which certain gases in the atmosphere are being warmed by the sun and are trapping in heat between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere itself. The use of fossil fuels which, when used, give off greenhouse gases. Most modern technology relies upon the burning of fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, and oil. This means that we are burning more fossil fuels that are giving off more greenhouse gases as supported by the timeline of emission growth below.
As a species, we must find other reliable energy sources aside from fossil fuels that are safe and efficient. Nuclear energy is too dangerous for people to have in their backyard. (Ex. Chernobyl, Fukushima Daiichi) Other sources of energy such as solar power, are not efficient or constant enough to support the large demand for a better energy supply. Until this new kind of energy iss found and can be harnessed, fossil fuel will continue to make the oceans rise and then we will run out of fossil fuels.
