Ken Holland: The Man Behind the Mask

The Insiders' Perspective
As a lifelong hockey fan and a loyal follower of the Edmonton Oilers, Ken Holland's name has always been synonymous with excellence. From his playing days to his remarkable career as a general manager, Holland has left an indelible mark on the sport. So, when I had the opportunity to sit down with the man himself, I couldn't wait to dive into his world and learn the secrets of his success.
Little did I know that behind the professional facade of a seasoned NHL veteran lay a man with a surprising warmth and a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Over a cup of coffee at a cozy café, Holland regaled me with tales of his journey through the hockey world, from his humble beginnings to his current role as the Oilers' general manager.
A Relentless Competitor
Growing up in Vernon, British Columbia, hockey was more than just a game for Ken Holland; it was a passion. According to him, "I always wanted to be a hockey player. I didn't care if I was the best player, but I wanted to be the hardest-working player." And work hard he did. Holland's determination and relentless work ethic earned him a spot on the Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League, where he honed his skills as a goaltender.
Under the tutelage of legendary coach Terry Crisp, Holland developed into one of the league's top prospects. His impressive performance caught the attention of the Detroit Red Wings, who drafted him in 1975. Holland's NHL debut came two years later, and he quickly established himself as a reliable backup to the great Glenn Hall.
From the Crease to the Front Office
After retiring from playing in 1989, Holland transitioned seamlessly into his new role as a scout for the Red Wings. His keen eye for talent and ability to connect with players made him a natural in the front office. In 1997, he was promoted to assistant general manager and played a pivotal role in Detroit's Stanley Cup victories in 1997, 1998, and 2002.
Holland's success in Detroit caught the attention of the Edmonton Oilers, who were looking for a new general manager to lead them out of the hockey wilderness. In 2019, he accepted the challenge and moved to the City of Champions.
The Oilers Renaissance
With Holland at the helm, the Oilers have undergone a remarkable renaissance. He has overhauled the roster, bringing in talented players like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman. Under his leadership, the Oilers have become a legitimate Stanley Cup contender, reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2020 and 2022.
The Key to Success
When I asked Holland the secret to his success, he didn't hesitate. "It's all about building relationships," he said. "I've been fortunate to have played with and worked with some amazing people, and I've learned that the most important thing is to treat everyone with respect. Whether it's a player, a coach, or a member of the front office, everyone deserves to be treated fairly."
A Man of Character
Beyond his hockey accomplishments, Holland is also a man of great character. He is actively involved in the community, supporting organizations like the Stollery Children's Hospital and the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. He also served as the president of Hockey Canada from 2014 to 2016.
A Legacy of Excellence
Ken Holland's legacy in the hockey world is secure. As a player, he was a fierce competitor who always gave his all. As a general manager, he has built championship-caliber teams and helped countless players reach their full potential. But more importantly, he is a man of integrity, kindness, and compassion. His impact on the sport and the Edmonton Oilers will be felt for generations to come.
