Kizza Besigye: Uganda's Unwavering Force for Change

Dr. Kizza Besigye is a man of unwavering determination, a voice that resonates with the Ugandan people. His journey as a physician, military officer, and fierce opposition leader has shaped him into a symbol of resilience and hope.
Growing up in the remote hills of southwestern Uganda, Besigye witnessed firsthand the struggles and injustices faced by his people. Inspired by the ideals of freedom and equality, he joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1982, fighting alongside President Yoweri Museveni to overthrow the tyrannical regime of Milton Obote.
However, Besigye's political awakening came later, as he watched with growing concern the authoritarian tendencies of the new government. In 2001, he broke away from Museveni's National Resistance Movement (NRM) to form his own political party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Since then, Besigye's life has been an endless cycle of elections, protests, and imprisonment. He has challenged Museveni in four presidential elections, each marred by accusations of fraud and suppression. Yet, through it all, he remains unyielding in his belief that Uganda deserves a better future.
Beyond the electoral arena, Besigye has become a rallying force for civil society, advocating for human rights, good governance, and economic equality. His leadership has inspired countless young Ugandans to believe that change is possible.
Despite facing numerous arrests and charges, Besigye remains defiant. His resilience is rooted in the deep affection he holds for his country and the unwavering support of his wife, Winnie Byanyima, a prominent human rights activist.
