Kukulkan, or the Mayan snake diety. (Pat Flan Pic)
Kukulcan, or the snake diety was warshipped highly by the indiginous people of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico until the Spanish conquest of the area. The roots of this Mayan diety date back to the Classic Period for the Mayans, roughly around 200 B.C.E. Other than dating the carvings little is known of the origin of Kukulkan, though the carvings portraying Kukulkan are very common amongst Mayan Ruins.
I was lucky enough to visit perhaps the most famous display of Kukulkan. On the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico stands the Temple of Kukulkan.
Temple of Kukulkan, (Starring Tim and Luba Flanigan)
This temple has four staircases, one pointing in each cardinal direction. These four staircases are each lined with a carving of Kukulkan. These carvings are situated so on two days of the year the steps of the pyramid cast shadows onto the carvings imitating the body of a snake. It is said during this time Kukulkan visits the area to communicate with its followers.
(I did not take this one...)
