Holt was born in Marin County, California, in 1959. He grew up in a family of educators and was always fascinated by the power of words. After graduating from high school, he attended California State University, Sacramento, where he studied broadcast journalism.
Holt's career began in 1981 when he joined KCRA-TV in Sacramento as a reporter. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the station's anchor in 1986. In 1990, he moved to WBBM-TV in Chicago, where he spent 13 years as the anchor of the station's nightly newscast.
In 2003, Holt joined MSNBC as the anchor of "Countdown with Lester Holt." He also served as a correspondent for NBC Nightly News and Today. In 2015, he was named the anchor of NBC Nightly News, succeeding Brian Williams.
Under Holt's leadership, NBC Nightly News has consistently been the number one-rated evening newscast in the United States. Holt has also been recognized for his coverage of major events, including the 2016 presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Black Lives Matter protests.

In addition to his work as a journalist, Holt is also a dedicated philanthropist. He is a board member of the American Red Cross and the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation. He is also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
Holt is married to Carol Hagen, a former flight attendant. They have two children, Stefan and Cameron.
