LG Twins catcher Park Dong-won has offered words of encouragement to the backup catchers who are filling in his absence.
Park, who was placed on the disabled list with a knee injury on March 13, returned to the first team on March 23. Upon rejoining the first team, Park started as the designated hitter against the Hanwha Eagles in Daejeon and went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI, one walk, and one run scored, contributing to the team's 8-4 victory.
Park Dong-won started in the No. 5 spot in the lineup against the NC Dinos at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on April 24 and went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. It was the first time this season that he hit more than two home runs in a game.
Park hit a 140-kilometer-per-hour fastball from left-handed reliever Choi Sung-young in the fourth inning for a massive two-run shot that landed in the top of the left-field bleachers, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, Park hit a 147-kilometer-per-hour fastball from right-handed rookie Choi Woo-seok for a one-run home run to left field.
After the game, Park said, "With one out and three runners on base, it was a good opportunity to get a hit, so I felt comfortable hitting it. The second home run honestly didn't look like it was going to go over (the fence), but I got lucky," he said.
Park continued his hot hitting, going 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBIs in his first two games back. "I was disappointed to be sent down to the second team because I felt good. The rehab team took care of me, and the 사설토토 manager gave me a one-on-one coach. The coaches also cared a lot, which is why I was able to perform so well."
Park, who has been the designated hitter for two straight games, will not play defense in the three-game series this weekend. He will start wearing a catcher's mask next week.
"I can't practice defense right now," Park said. The training staff is taking care of me, but they said that if I get injured again, I will have to rest for a long time. I am receiving good treatment every day," he said, adding, "I am preparing hard by playing catch."
During Park's absence, backup catchers Heo Do-hwan and Kim Bum-seok guarded the bullpen. Park expressed his gratitude to the catchers for filling in for him. He said, "They cheered a lot. I hope I can go out there and do well, but right now, the other players can do a good enough job. (Heo) Do-hwan and (Kim) Bum-seok are also good catchers," he said.
"He must have been stressed because the team's flow was not good. There's a KakaoTalk group chat room for the catchers and power analysis team, and they always leave messages of support, saying, 'Let's keep fighting, we can do well.' The best thing I can say to them is, 'Let's keep fighting. I think that's the best thing I can say to them."
