Born in Italy in 1977, Attanasio joined the diplomatic service in 2003. His first posting was to the Italian embassy in Bern, Switzerland. He subsequently served in Kabul, Afghanistan, and Rabat, Morocco. In 2019, he was appointed ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
