I
grew up in a small town in the heart of England. Football was a religion in our town, and there were two teams that everyone supported: Manchester City and Fulham. I was a City fan, through and through. My father had been a City fan, and his father before him. It was in our blood.
Fulham, on the other hand, was the team that all the outsiders supported. They were the team that the kids from the rougher parts of town supported. They were the team that the people who didn't really care about football supported.
I remember the first time I saw Fulham play. I was about 10 years old, and my father took me to see them play at Craven Cottage. I was amazed by the atmosphere. The fans were so passionate, and they sang their hearts out for the whole 90 minutes. I was hooked.
From that day on, I was a Fulham fan as well as a City fan. I loved the way they played, and I loved the way the fans supported them. I even started to wear a Fulham shirt to school, much to the chagrin of my City-supporting friends.
As I got older, I started to understand the rivalry between City and Fulham. It was more than just a football rivalry. It was a rivalry between two different worlds. City was the team of the rich and powerful. Fulham was the team of the working class.
The rivalry between the two teams was at its height in the early 2000s. City were one of the best teams in the country, while Fulham were struggling to stay in the Premier League. I remember going to see City play Fulham at the Etihad Stadium in 2003. City won 5-1, and the Fulham fans were devastated.
But Fulham always seemed to come back stronger. They were relegated to the Championship in 2004, but they bounced back and won promotion the following season. They were relegated again in 2008, but they won promotion again the following season.
In recent years, the rivalry between City and Fulham has cooled somewhat. City have become one of the best teams in the world, while Fulham have been struggling to stay in the Premier League. But the rivalry is still there, and it always flares up when the two teams meet.
I'm a City fan, but I have a lot of respect for Fulham. They are a great club with a passionate fan base. They are a team that has always fought against the odds, and they are a team that I will always support.
The rivalry between City and Fulham is a rivalry between two different worlds. But it is also a rivalry between two great clubs. I'm proud to be a fan of both teams.
