Rising Sea Levels on the East Coast

  • Over the past few hundred years the levels of the ocean have slowly begun to rise worldwide.
  • Currently the ocean is only rising about 3mm per a year.
  • At this rate rising sea levels would not have a major effect on the east coast in the next 100 years.
  • One conern is that the rate of sea level rise will continue to increase
  • While the east coast may not be at risk of rising sea levels anytime soon as sea levels rise so does the damage that accompanies storm surges.
  • Overtime if sea levels continue to rise some low lying areas may need to relocate as a result of flooding.
  • Scientists believe that the two main causes of rising sea levels is thermal expansion(expansion of water because its warm) and the melting of glaciers
