Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are dying and need to be protected. I believe that if the coral reefs help provide food and medicine for the people of Earth and provide protection from waves. I believe that public interaction with the corals should be stopped until the coral reefs are back and flourishing. If this happens, and the coral reefs are back and healthy, human interactions should be regulated so the coral reefs are not harmed like they are today.

Some human affects on the coral reefs include:

  • Overfishing
  • Inland Pollution
  • Coastal development

If fishers were limited to the amount of fish they can keep, we could reduce the amount of pollution into the ocean, and we could protect  the coasts it would also allow the coral reefs and its inhabitants to thrive.

Although it may seem like humans are the only ones affecting the coral reef's health, we are not. Coral reefs need a specific environment to live and prosper in. The world is changing and so are the water temperatures and salinity due to the melting glaciers. This change in temperature and salinity of the waters are causing the reefs to die. The chart below shows the amount bleeching of coral reefs, which would most likely result in death, the past few years.
