I'm not sure if you've ever met Maudene Pere, but she's one of the most interesting and eccentric people I know. In fact, I always said that she'd do something to land herself on the six o'clock news - and here it is! You won't believe what happened...
The phone call came in the middle of the night. It was Maudene's neighbor, and she was in hysterics. She said that she had gone over to check on Maudene because she hadn't seen her all day, and when she got there, she found Maudene asleep on the couch with her cat curled up on her chest.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "What's the big deal? People sleep with their cats all the time." But here's the thing: Maudene's cat is named Mittens. And Mittens is a 20-pound Maine Coon.
So, yeah, Maudene had been sleeping with a 20-pound cat on her chest. And she didn't even realize it.
When I got to Maudene's house, she was still asleep. I tried to wake her up, but she was out like a light. So I decided to do the only thing I could: I took a picture.
I'm not sure if it was the flash of the camera or the sound of my laughter that finally woke Maudene up, but when she opened her eyes, she was completely disoriented.
"Where am I?" she asked.
"You're at home, Maudene," I said.
"What am I doing here?" she asked.
"You were sleeping," I said.
"With Mittens on my chest?" she asked.
"Yes," I said.
Maudene looked down at Mittens, who was still sound asleep. She smiled and said, "Oh, I see." Then she closed her eyes and went back to sleep.
I left Maudene's house and went home, laughing all the way. I knew that I would never forget the sight of Maudene sleeping with a 20-pound cat on her chest.
The next day, I went back to Maudene's house to check on her. She was still in bed, but she was awake this time.
"How are you feeling?" I asked.
"I'm a little sore," she said.
"From Mittens?" I asked.
"No," she said. "From laughing so hard."
I'm glad that Maudene is okay. And I'm glad that she has such a sense of humor about the whole thing. After all, it's not every day that you wake up to find a 20-pound cat on your chest.
I'm also glad that I got a picture of it. It's a memory that I will cherish forever.
So, next time you're feeling down, just remember the story of Maudene Pere and her cat, Mittens. It's sure to put a smile on your face.
