From Humble Beginnings
Axel Rudakubana's story begins in the heart of Rwanda, where he grew up witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of war and poverty. Yet, amid these challenges, he discovered a passion for technology that would ultimately shape his destiny. "I was fascinated by how computers could connect people and empower them to create change," recalls Axel.
Embracing the Power of Education
Determined to pursue his dream, Axel dedicated himself to his studies. He excelled in mathematics and science, earning a scholarship to study computer science at Ashesi University in Ghana. During his time there, he immersed himself in coding, software development, and artificial intelligence.

Axel remembers one pivotal moment in his college years: "I was part of a team that won a hackathon with a mobile application we developed to connect farmers with buyers. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that showed me the practical power of technology to make a difference in people's lives."

Breaking into the Tech Industry
After graduating with honors from Ashesi, Axel returned to Rwanda eager to contribute to his country's technological advancement. He secured his first job as a software engineer at Liquid Telecom, where he spent several years honing his skills and gaining valuable industry experience.
"Working at Liquid Telecom exposed me to the challenges and opportunities of telecommunications in Africa," says Axel. "I saw how technology could bridge the digital divide, connect rural communities, and create new economic opportunities."
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
In 2019, driven by a burning desire to make a lasting impact, Axel co-founded Zindi, a data science competition platform that connects businesses with talented data scientists across Africa. Zindi aims to empower African data scientists, foster innovation, and drive economic growth through technology.
"Zindi started as a small idea, but it has grown into a thriving community of over 45,000 data scientists," Axel shares. "We're breaking down barriers and helping African talent to compete on a global scale."
A Passion for Giving Back
Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Axel is deeply committed to giving back to his community. He actively mentors young aspiring tech entrepreneurs and volunteers his time to support various educational initiatives in Rwanda.
"I believe that everyone has the potential to succeed, regardless of their background," says Axel. "I want to inspire and empower the next generation of Rwandan tech leaders."
