Meet Edward Higgins White Samz - The Man Who Made History

Edward Higgins White Samz, an astronaut who made history as the first American to perform a spacewalk, was born on November 14, 1930, in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1952 and earned a master's degree in engineering from the University of Michigan in 1959.
In 1962, Edward Higgins White Samz was selected to join NASA's second astronaut group. He made his first spaceflight in 1965 on the Gemini 4 mission, becoming the first American to walk in space. During his spacewalk, Edward Higgins White Samz spent 20 minutes outside the spacecraft, taking photographs and conducting experiments.
Edward Higgins White Samz died in the Apollo 1 fire on January 27, 1967, along with his crewmates, Virgil I. Grissom and Roger B. Chaffee. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
