Meet Maddon Caneiro, the Boy Who Couldn't Sleep
I can't sleep, I can't sleep, I can't sleep.
Maddon Caneiro tossed and turned in his bed, but sleep wouldn't come. He'd been lying there for hours, staring at the ceiling, counting sheep. But the sheep just kept jumping over the fence and running away.
Maddon sighed. He was so tired. He just wanted to close his eyes and drift off, but his brain wouldn't stop racing. He thought about school, about his friends, about the test he had tomorrow.
He thought about everything, except sleep.
I want to sleep, I want to sleep, I want to sleep.
Finally, Maddon couldn't take it anymore. He got out of bed and went downstairs to the kitchen. His mom was sitting at the table, reading a book.
"Mom," Maddon said, "I can't sleep."
His mom looked up. "I know, honey. I can tell."
"I've been trying for hours," Maddon said. "But I just can't do it."
His mom smiled. "That's okay. Let's try something."
She got up and went to the cabinet. She took out a cup and poured Maddon a glass of warm milk.
"Drink this," she said. "It will help you relax."
Maddon took the glass and sipped the milk. It was warm and soothing. He felt a little bit better already.
"Now, let's go back to bed," his mom said. "We'll do some deep breathing exercises."
They went back to Maddon's room and sat down on his bed. Maddon's mom put her hand on his chest and said, "Take a deep breath in through your nose."
Maddon did as he was told. He took a deep breath in, all the way down to his tummy.
"Now, let it out slowly through your mouth," his mom said.
Maddon exhaled, letting all the air out of his lungs.
They did the deep breathing exercises for a few minutes. Maddon felt himself relax even more. His eyelids started to feel heavy.
"That feels good," Maddon said.
"I'm glad," his mom said. "Now, lie down and close your eyes."
Maddon lay down on his bed and closed his eyes. He took a few more deep breaths.
He could feel himself drifting off to sleep.
I'm so sleepy, I'm so sleepy, I'm so sleepy.
Maddon Caneiro slept soundly for the rest of the night. He dreamed of sheep, but this time they weren't running away. They were all huddled together, sleeping peacefully.
And so was Maddon Caneiro.
