I found today very informative, not just because I learnt a lot about the applications that can be used easily in the classroom, but also because the interaction of the people in the room raised many questions for me. Should students be encouraged to use "distractions" in the classroom? Maybe my teaching years ago was not as interactive as I thought it was - maybe I have the need to control the classroom environment when the generations have changed and the current generation does not need the security of boundaries?
I should certainly not treat the current student body as I myself was treated, the generations have changed and they respond very differently. Active interaction is more than just answering questions and group-work... using technology both inside and outside the classroom can increase the interaction greatly. An online tut, where students get together virtually and discuss key points before an exam, or after a particularly difficult section, would be a very good thing! Those who are interested in participating will attend, while those who don't participate in class due to fear may find it easier to do so in a virtual space.
Very useful!
