Methanol poisoning: an all too common danger

Methanol is a colorless, volatile liquid with a slightly pungent odor that is often used as a solvent or to make other chemicals.

It can also be found in some products like shellac, varnish, paint remover, and windshield washer fluid.

Unfortunately, methanol is also a toxic substance that can cause serious illness or even death if ingested.

How does methanol poisoning happen?

Methanol poisoning can occur if you swallow, inhale, or absorb methanol through your skin.

The most common way that people are poisoned by methanol is by drinking it.

This can happen accidentally, such as when someone drinks methanol that has been mislabeled as ethanol (drinking alcohol), or intentionally, such as when someone drinks methanol to get drunk.

Methanol can also be inhaled in the workplace, such as in factories where it is used as a solvent.

Finally, methanol can be absorbed through the skin, such as when someone comes into contact with methanol-based products.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning

The symptoms of methanol poisoning can vary depending on the amount of methanol that has been consumed or absorbed, as well as the length of time that the person has been exposed to it.

Early symptoms of methanol poisoning can include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness

Later symptoms of methanol poisoning can include:

  • Confusion
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Death

Methanol poisoning can also cause permanent damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to blindness.

Treatment for methanol poisoning

The treatment for methanol poisoning depends on the severity of the poisoning, but it typically involves administering an antidote called fomepizole.

Fomepizole blocks the metabolism of methanol, which can prevent the body from producing the toxic metabolites that cause the symptoms of methanol poisoning.

In some cases, a person may also need to be given dialysis to remove methanol from the body.

Prevention of methanol poisoning

The best way to prevent methanol poisoning is to avoid exposing yourself to methanol.

Never drink methanol, and avoid using products that contain methanol whenever possible.

If you work with methanol, be sure to follow all safety precautions, such as wearing gloves and a mask.

Methanol poisoning is a serious condition that can cause permanent damage or even death.

If you think that you or someone you know has been exposed to methanol, seek medical attention immediately.
