Michaela DePrince: An Extraordinary Journey From Sierra Leone to the World’s Stages

From humble beginnings in a Sierra Leonean orphanage to gracing the stages of prestigious ballet companies worldwide, Michaela DePrince’s life is a testament to hope, resilience, and the transformative power of art. Born in 1995 amidst the horrors of civil war, Michaela’s childhood was marked by unimaginable hardships. In the orphanage, she was often stigmatized for her skin condition, vitiligo, earning her the cruel nickname “Devil Child.”

But even in the darkest of circumstances, Michaela's spirit remained unbroken. She found solace in dance, discovering its ability to heal and empower. Despite the limited resources available in the orphanage, she would often dance in the dirt, using her imagination to create intricate steps and stories.

In 2004, Michaela’s life took a dramatic turn when she was adopted by an American couple, Elaine and Charles DePrince. They brought her to the United States, where she faced a whole new set of challenges. She had to overcome cultural barriers and adapt to a new language and environment, all while pursuing her dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer.

With unwavering determination, Michaela dedicated herself to rigorous training. She faced countless setbacks and rejections, but she never gave up. Her passion for dance fueled her, driving her to excel and prove her critics wrong.

Michaela’s breakthrough came in 2011 when she was accepted into the prestigious American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. She became one of the few black female dancers in the school's history, making her a trailblazer in the ballet world.

In 2012, Michaela made her professional debut with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Her exceptional artistry and expressive stage presence quickly captivated audiences. She went on to perform with renowned companies such as the Boston Ballet, the Dutch National Ballet, and the Royal Swedish Ballet.
