Mike Oyier is Trying to Bring the NBA to Kenya
Mike Oyier grew up in Kisumu, Kenya, playing basketball with his friends on a dirt court. The son of a truck driver and a nurse, Oyier was always a talented athlete, but he never imagined that he would one day play in the NBA.
After graduating from high school, Oyier moved to the United States to attend college. He played basketball at a small college in Texas, where he quickly made a name for himself as a talented scorer and rebounder. After two years of college, Oyier was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks. He became the first Kenyan to ever play in the NBA.
Oyier played in the NBA for five seasons, but he never became a star. He was a solid role player, but he never averaged more than 10 points per game. Despite his lack of individual success, Oyier was a valuable member of the Mavericks. He was a great teammate and he always played hard.
After retiring from the NBA, Oyier returned to Kenya to start a basketball academy. He wanted to give Kenyan children the same opportunity that he had. The academy has been a great success, and several of its players have gone on to play college basketball in the United States.
Oyier is now working to bring the NBA to Kenya. He is the founder of the Basketball Africa League, a new professional basketball league that will feature teams from across Africa. The league will launch in 2020, and Oyier hopes that it will help to raise the profile of basketball in Africa and inspire a new generation of players.
Oyier is a role model for young Kenyans. He is living proof that anything is possible if you work hard and never give up on your dreams. He is also a pioneer for basketball in Africa. He is helping to make theNBA a truly global game.
