Well, who would have guessed?
On December 12th, 2023, my home team CF Monterrey went against the Columbus Crew in the Leagues Cup Showcase.
I had no idea if my team was prepared enough, after all the playing field was in Arizona which is something new for my team.
Fortunately, the league cup doesn’t count towards a title, so it wasn’t that important of a game.

I was excited to see Monterrey after the World Cup break.
Several Mexican teams’ players participated in the world cup, and they performed excellently.

I sat down, just in time to see the Mexican team kick off.
Monterrey showed dominance from the get-go; the crew barely had time to control the ball.
Out of all the Crew’s attempts to try and get the ball, only one of them was successful, and that was in the 83rd minute.
Monterrey had a total of 18 shots; only 4 of them were actually on goal.
The Crew had 12 shots and only one was on goal.
Monterrey clearly showed their superiority during the game.

At the end of the first half, Rogelio Funes Mori, a player for Monterrey, was tackled by a Crew player, and he unfortunately got injured and could not continue playing the rest of the game.
In the second half, Monterrey’s Germán Berterame got a penalty kick and scored, giving Monterrey a lead.
The Crew still could not perform up to par with Monterrey.

Monterrey’s players controlled the entire match.
The crew could not connect the passes, nor did they know how to defend Monterrey.
Monterrey’s defense was impeccable, they were able to recover and steal the ball from the Crew every time.

The game ended 3-1.
The three goals for Monterrey were scored by Germán Berterame, Arturo González, and Maximiliano Meza.
The only goal for the Crew was scored by Cucho Hernández.

Fun fact: the player with the most fouls was Ian Fray, from the Crew.

Monterrey’s next game is going to be against the Seattle Sounders on February 25th, 2023.
