NAIDOC: A Time for Reflection and Reconciliation

NAIDOC is a time to recognize and celebrate the rich culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As a nation built on the stolen lands of the First Australians, it is paramount that we take time to acknowledge and reflect upon the past and present experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity to do just that.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. It began in 1938 as a day of mourning for the loss of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lives and culture. Over the years, it has evolved into a week-long celebration that recognizes the resilience, strength, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
This year's NAIDOC theme, "Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!," is a powerful call to action. It reminds us that we all have a role to play in creating a more just and equitable society for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Getting up, standing up, and showing up can take many forms. It can mean listening to the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, learning about their history and culture, and challenging racism and discrimination. It can also mean supporting Aboriginal-owned businesses, attending cultural events, and advocating for policies that promote equality and justice.
As a nation, we have a long way to go on the path to reconciliation. But NAIDOC Week is an important reminder that we can all make a difference. By standing up for what is right, we can help to create a better future for all Australians.

  • Here are some ways to get involved in NAIDOC Week:
    • Attend a NAIDOC event in your community.
    • Support Aboriginal-owned businesses.

    • Learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.

    • Challenge racism and discrimination.

    • Advocate for policies that promote equality and justice.

NAIDOC Week is a time for reflection, reconciliation, and celebration. May we all use this opportunity to learn, grow, and work together to build a better future for all Australians.
