Narak Chaturdashi: The Eve of Diwali

Narak Chaturdashi, also known as Choti Diwali or Roop Chaudas, is a significant Hindu festival observed on the fourteenth day of the Krishna Paksha in the Ashvin month. It is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna vanquished the demon Narakasura and liberated the people from his tyranny.
The Legend of Narakasura
According to Hindu mythology, Narakasura was a powerful and cruel demon who ruled the kingdom of Pragjyotisha. He had conquered many kingdoms and had become an intolerable menace to the gods and humans alike. His arrogance knew no bounds, and he even abducted 16,000 women from across the universe.
To put an end to Narakasura's tyranny, Lord Krishna descended to earth in his incarnation as Satyabhama. He rode his eagle mount, Garuda, and engaged in a fierce battle with the demon. After a prolonged and grueling battle, Krishna finally slew Narakasura, liberating the world from his evil reign.
Rituals and Customs
Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated with various rituals and customs across India. One of the most important rituals is the Abhyanga Snan, where people take an early morning oil bath mixed with fragrant herbs and spices. This bath is believed to cleanse the body and ward off evil spirits.
Another popular custom is the lighting of diyas (earthen lamps) in every corner of the house. These lamps are believed to guide Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, into the home. People also worship Kali, the goddess of destruction, on this day to protect themselves from evil forces.
In some parts of India, people perform Roop Chaudas, where they apply tilak (a mark on the forehead) to young girls and boys, wishing them a long and healthy life.
