Navy sailor lost overboard

A Navy sailor was lost overboard from the USS Essex in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, the Navy said.
The sailor, whose name has not been released, was assigned to the Essex, an amphibious assault ship.
The sailor was reported missing at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Navy said. A search and rescue operation was launched, but the sailor was not found.
The Navy said the sailor was wearing a life jacket when he went overboard.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
Sailors lost at sea are often never found

The vastness of the ocean makes it difficult to find sailors who go overboard. Even if a search and rescue operation is launched quickly, the chances of finding a sailor alive are slim.

In 2017, there were 38 sailors who went overboard from U.S. Navy ships. Of those sailors, only 11 were found alive.
The dangers of going overboard

There are many dangers associated with going overboard. Sailors can be injured or killed by the impact of the water, or they can drown. Sailors can also be injured by marine life, such as sharks or jellyfish.

In addition, sailors who go overboard can be disoriented and confused. They may not be able to find their way back to the ship, and they may succumb to the elements.
How to prevent sailors from going overboard

There are a number of things that can be done to prevent sailors from going overboard. These include:

  • Using life jackets
  • Posting lookouts
  • Installing guardrails
  • Educating sailors about the dangers of going overboard
The importance of search and rescue operations

Search and rescue operations are essential for saving the lives of sailors who go overboard. These operations are often difficult and dangerous, but they are often successful.

In 2017, the U.S. Navy rescued 11 sailors who had gone overboard. These sailors were able to return to their families and friends thanks to the efforts of the search and rescue crews.
