New Alaafin of Oyo

The throne of the Alaafin of Oyo has been vacant for over a year, following the death of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in April 2022. The selection of a new Alaafin is a complex and delicate process involving various stakeholders, including the Oyo Mesi, the kingmakers of Oyo town, and the Oyo State government.

After months of deliberation and consultations, the Oyo Mesi has finally presented three candidates to the Oyo State government for consideration. The candidates are Prince Akeem Adeyemi, a son of the late Alaafin; Prince Tunde Adegboyega, a former chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board; and Prince Abdulrasheed Adewale Adeyemo, a successful businessman.

The Oyo State government is expected to make a decision on the new Alaafin soon. Whoever is chosen will have big shoes to fill, as the Alaafin of Oyo is not only the traditional ruler of Oyo town but also a prominent figure in Yoruba culture and history.

The new Alaafin will be expected to uphold the traditions and customs of Oyo town, as well as to promote the development of the town and its people. He will also be expected to play a role in fostering unity and understanding among the Yoruba people.

The selection of a new Alaafin is a significant event for the people of Oyo town and for the Yoruba people in general. It is a time for reflection and celebration, as well as a time to look to the future and to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

We wish the new Alaafin all the best in his new role. May he reign with wisdom, justice, and compassion.
