Yet, despite his legendary status, his name remains relatively unknown outside a certain circle of cognoscenti. Nick Gravenites was born in Chicago in 1938, the son of Greek immigrants. From a young age, he was drawn to the music of the Mississippi Delta, and he began playing guitar and singing the blues in his teens. In the mid-1960s, Gravenites moved to San Francisco, where he became a key figure in the city's burgeoning psychedelic blues scene. He was a founding member of the Electric Flag, a band that featured the likes of Mike Bloomfield and Buddy Miles. The Electric Flag's self-titled debut album, released in 1968, is a masterpiece of psychedelic soul, and Gravenites' songwriting and guitar playing are simply stunning.
After the Electric Flag disbanded, Gravenites went on to release a series of solo albums, including the classic "My Labors" (1969) and "Bluestar" (1974). These albums showcased Gravenites' unique blend of blues, rock, and folk, and they helped to cement his reputation as one of the finest songwriters and guitarists of his generation.
Gravenites' music is characterized by its raw emotionality, its deep blues roots, and its distinctive guitar playing. He was a master of slide guitar, and his solos were often fiery and improvisational. But Gravenites was also a gifted songwriter, and his songs are full of wit, wisdom, and heart.
In addition to his own music, Gravenites also produced albums for other artists, including Janis Joplin and Mike Bloomfield. He was also a mentor to many young musicians, including Bonnie Raitt and Ry Cooder.
