No Woman, No Cry: Dorica Hensgen's Solo Backpacking Adventure

By Dorica Hensgen

In the bustling city where I reside, the thought of embarking on a solo backpacking adventure may seem like a far-fetched fantasy. But for me, Dorica Hensgen, it was a burning desire that I could no longer ignore.
After months of meticulous planning and a surge of mixed emotions, I finally found myself standing at the departure gate, filled with equal parts trepidation and exhilaration. As the aircraft took off, I gazed out the window, a lump forming in my throat. I was on my own, venturing into the unknown, but I was determined to make the most of this extraordinary experience.
My first destination was the vibrant city of Bangkok, Thailand. Immersed in the chaos and cacophony of the streets, I quickly realized that this was a place where anything was possible. I strolled through bustling markets, haggling with vendors and marveling at the exotic fruits and spices. As the sun began its descent, I found myself drawn to a small rooftop bar overlooking the city. Sipping on a refreshing cocktail, I soaked in the breathtaking panorama of Bangkok's skyline.
From Bangkok, I embarked on a thrilling overnight train ride to Chiang Mai, a charming city nestled in the mountainous north of Thailand. Upon arriving, I sought adventure by renting a motorbike and exploring the surrounding countryside. The winding roads led me through lush rice paddies and quaint villages, offering a glimpse into a way of life that seemed untouched by time. In the evenings, I would wander through the bustling night markets, sampling local delicacies and chatting with friendly locals.
As my journey progressed, I found myself in the heart of Southeast Asia, on the sun-kissed beaches of Koh Samui, Thailand. I spent my days basking in the tropical paradise, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and indulging in rejuvenating spa treatments. But amidst the relaxation, I couldn't resist a hike through the lush rainforests that blanketed the interior of the island. Amidst the towering trees and exotic wildlife, I felt a profound sense of peace and serenity.
My solo adventure extended beyond Thailand. I ventured into Cambodia, where I was awestruck by the grandeur of Angkor Wat. As I explored the sprawling temple complex, I couldn't help but wonder about the civilization that had created such an architectural marvel centuries ago. Continuing north, I traveled to Vietnam, where I was captivated by the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes. From the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the serene beauty of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam offered an unforgettable experience.
As I prepared to return home, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I had not only conquered my fears but also discovered new strengths within myself. Solo backpacking had been a transformative journey, one that challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and embrace the unexpected.
To those who may question the wisdom of a woman embarking on a solo backpacking adventure, I offer this: Do not be afraid. With careful planning and a positive attitude, anything is possible. The world is a vast and wondrous place, just waiting to be explored.
