Notts County




Notts County Football Club is a professional football club based in Nottingham, England. The club was founded in 1862 and is the oldest professional football club in the world. Notts County currently plays in the National League, the fifth tier of English football.

History

Notts County was founded in 1862 by a group of cricket players who were looking for a way to stay fit during the winter months. The club's first match was against a team from the town of Beeston, and Notts County won 1-0. The club played its first competitive match in 1863, in the Notts Senior Cup. Notts County won the cup in 1864, and again in 1865 and 1866.

In 1888, Notts County became one of the founding members of the Football League. The club played in the First Division for the first time in 1890, and remained in the top flight for 26 of the next 27 seasons. Notts County's most successful period was in the early 1900s, when the club won the FA Cup twice, in 1894 and 1902. The club also won the Second Division title in 1897 and 1914.

After the First World War, Notts County's fortunes declined, and the club was relegated to the Second Division in 1926. The club returned to the First Division in 1931, but was relegated again in 1932. Notts County remained in the Second Division for the next 30 years, before being relegated to the Third Division in 1962.

Notts County returned to the Second Division in 1967, and remained in the second tier for the next 20 years. The club was relegated to the Third Division in 1987, and to the Fourth Division in 1991. Notts County returned to the Third Division in 1998, and to the Second Division in 2001.

Notts County was relegated to the Fourth Division in 2009, and to the National League in 2019. The club currently plays in the National League, and is hoping to win promotion back to the Football League.

Notts County has had a number of famous players over the years, including England internationals Jimmy Seed, Jesse Pennington, and Arthur Topham. The club's all-time top goalscorer is Tommy Lawton, who scored 226 goals for Notts County in the 1930s.

Notts County has a loyal following of supporters, who are known as the "Magpies". The club's home ground is Meadow Lane, which has a capacity of 19,500. The Magpies are known for their passionate support, and they often create a great atmosphere at Meadow Lane.
