INDIANAPOLIS - Jimmie Johnson will make his first Indianapolis 500 beginning this year all things considered — with the TV team, not on the course.
NBC Sports said Tuesday it will utilize Johnson for studio inclusion of the Indianapolis 500 on both race day and qualifying end of the week.
The seven-time NASCAR champion is currently an IndyCar tenderfoot running just the street and road courses, a choice that has sidelined Johnson for the four ovals on the timetable including the Indianapolis 500. He's at no other time gone to an Indy 500.
"To say I am energized for May in Indianapolis is putting it mildly," Johnson said. "I totally can't stand by to take everything in."
