High School Roundup: Johnson Wins Sixth Straight State Title In Girls Badminton

Johnson won its sixth straight girls badminton state championship, and 11th state title overall, with a 6-1 win over Humboldt on Thursday at Burnsville High School.

Johnson this season didn’t resemble its teams of old, at least not in experience. Because of the canceled 2020 season, only three of Johnson’s 10 starters had varsity experience. The school, which normally has 60-80 girls program-wide, had just 27 girls on the team. That made the state tournament performance even more noteworthy, coach Mark Fischbach said. 메이저사이트

“The ability to step right in and perform at a high level was impressive,” Fischbach said. “The commitment they had was incredible. They never complained, they didn’t take a day off.”

Fischbach brought his senior captains back from last year. All of them served as volunteer coaches throughout the season.

“It speaks to the family-like environment we have, that they wanted to come back and support the team even after they graduated,” he said.

Humboldt, the No. 3 seed, beat Washington in the semifinals to advance to the school’s first-ever state championship match.
