In the wake of beginning 4-over standard after four openings, Thome played the last 14 openings in 1-over standard at the Class 4 state golf competition at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon.

Thome — the main Handley golf player to play in a Virginia High School League consolidated young men's and young ladies' state competition beginning around 2005 — wrapped up with a 5-over standard 77 to tie for seventeenth among 60 golf players on Tuesday.

Thome was one of just two golf players from the Class 4 Northwestern District to fit the bill for the competition. Thome, who tied for second at the Northwestern District competition, tied region champion Ben Gray of Kettle Run with his score. Thome completed fourth among Region 4C golf players on Tuesday. Thome was 6th at the Region 4C competition at Winchester Country Club.

"I'm content with how I played," said Thome in a telephone meet on Tuesday. "I'm cheerful I returned on the back nine and I didn't simply surrender after the front."

Additionally on Tuesday, Clarke County sophomore Hunter Breece contended in the Class 2 state competition at Olde Mill Golf Resort in Laurel Fork and shot a 35-more than 107 to tie for 56th among 60 golf players. Breece shot a 87 at Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg at the Region 2B competition to fit the bill for Tuesday's state competition.

Thome said he was having issues putting right off the bat in his round. Thome parred the initial standard 4, however at that point recorded an intruder on No. 2 (standard 3), twofold intruder on No. 3 (standard 4) and one more intruder on No. 4 (standard 3).

"I missed an entirely makeable putt on the subsequent opening, and the third opening I four-putted, so I was not feeling excessively hot," said Thome with a chuckle. "Then, at that point, I three-putted the fourth opening.

"The initial four openings killed me. I just couldn't get the speed down. I was unable to get my lines down. I just couldn't putt on the initial four. From that point forward, I just at long last got the speed down, and I was fine."

Thome said he wasn't steady with his driver on Tuesday, however his iron play had a major effect.

"I felt exceptionally sure toward the back nine with my irons," Thome said. "My irons were very acceptable today on the back nine, which saved me a great deal."

The front nine is standard 35 at Glenrochie, and Thome entered the turn with a 5-more than 40 after likewise recording an intruder on the standard 5 seventh.

Thome played the back nine with an even-standard 37, featured by his birdies on the 417-yard, standard 4 twelfth opening and the 517-yard, standard 4 No. 14.

Handley mentor Troy Mezzatesta said the green on the fourteenth has water before it and a sand trap, and it's not difficult to hit the ball outside the field of play on the right side.

In the wake of driving the ball 306 yards, Thome's second shot with a six iron landed opening high, 12 feet from the cup. Mezzatesta said with another ball pivot on Thome's putt, he would have had a falcon. Thome said it was an inch from the opening.

"There's no leeway," Mezzatesta said. "I was thinking he planned to arrive on the facade of the green or barely shy of the green. He hits a laser, and it's right at the banner, directly on the line that we discussed."

Thome had intruder on 16 and 18 — he missed a troublesome right-to-left three-foot putt on 18 — yet by and large, Thome couldn't have improved in the last secondary school round of his vocation.

"I'm glad I'm here [in the state tournament]," said Thome, who lost in a season finisher for the last state competition billet at the Region 4C competition held in the spring of his lesser year. "I played great. Every one of the scores are somewhat higher than whatever I suspected they'd be."

"[After the initial four holes] he recently played astonishing," Mezzatesta said. "He nearly contributed to No. 8. He nearly contributed and made an incredible standard save money on No. 7.

"He recently struggled, combat, fought truly extreme. It's an extreme course. The greens are truly hard. I'm simply really glad for the power that he played with, the work that he gave, and the profession that he's had."
