Handley's Thome Ties For seventeenth At State Golf Tournament

In the wake of beginning 4-over standard after four openings, Thome played the last 14 openings in 1-over standard at the Class 4 state golf competition at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon. 

Thome — the main Handley golf player to play in a Virginia High School League consolidated young men's and young ladies' state competition beginning around 2005 — wrapped up with a 5-over standard 77 to tie for seventeenth among 60 golf players on Tuesday. 

Thome was one of just two golf players from the Class 4 Northwestern District to fit the bill for the competition. Thome, who tied for second at the Northwestern District competition, tied region champion Ben Gray of Kettle Run with his score. Thome completed fourth among Region 4C golf players on Tuesday. Thome was 6th at the Region 4C competition at Winchester Country Club. 

"I'm content with how I played," said Thome in a telephone meet on Tuesday. "I'm cheerful I returned on the back nine and I didn't simply surrender after the front." 

Additionally on Tuesday, Clarke County sophomore Hunter Breece contended in the Class 2 state competition at Olde Mill Golf Resort in Laurel Fork and shot a 35-more than 107 to tie for 56th among 60 golf players. Breece shot a 87 at Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg at the Region 2B competition to fit the bill for Tuesday's state competition. 

Thome said he was having issues putting right off the bat in his round. Thome parred the initial standard 4, however at that point recorded an intruder on No. 2 (standard 3), twofold intruder on No. 3 (standard 4) and one more intruder on No. 4 (standard 3).

"He recently struggled, combat, fought truly extreme. It's an extreme course. The greens are truly hard. I'm simply really glad for the power that he played with, the work that he gave, and the profession that he's had."
