MDI football starts summer exercises 

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Trojans are back on the field in anticipation of the arrival of contact football. 

MDI started offseason exercises with the main field night last Tuesday at Alumni Field. The Trojans, who had their second field night inside Tuesday evening, will keep on having field evenings every Tuesday through the finish of July, except for the following week. 

Field evenings are utilized for group building exercises and to help MDI make the change to eight-man football, another code of the game the Trojans are set to start this fall. The Trojans recently played the 11-man type of the game in Class C North. 

State baseball, softball champs delegated 

BANGOR — The 2020-21 secondary school sports season closed Saturday with the state title baseball and softball match-ups in Bangor, Brewer and Standish. 

One of Mount Desert Island's Penobscot Valley Conference enemies guaranteed the Class B title as Northern Maine No. 1 Old Town (16-4) beat Southern Maine No. 9 Freeport (14-7) in the state last. The Trojans carried the Coyotes really close to end in the territorial elimination rounds recently before Old Town raged back to guarantee a 7-6 success. 

In other state baseball activity, one of MDI's preseason adversaries, Searsport (10-10) crushed Machias 8-4 to win the Class D title. South Portland (16-5) beat Bangor (14-7) 3-2 on a stroll off stroll to win the Class A title, and Orono (17-3) crushed Monmouth (16-4) 5-0 to guarantee the Class C crown. 

In softball, Cape Elizabeth (21-0) and Hall-Dale (17-0) polished off unbeaten seasons with prevails upon Winslow (8-12) and Dexter (15-3) in the Class An and Class C finals, individually.
