ECOWAS stands for Economic Community of West African States. It’s a 15-country economic and political union, in Africa. Their headquarters is in Abuja, Nigeria.
West Africa and especially its coastal countries have some of the best beaches in the world by the way. You’d never guess now, but these countries used to battle each other over territory. My dad says they’d fight for as little as fish in the water.
But thank goodness, times have changed!ECOWAS was developed as a way to promote cooperation and integration between the countries of West Africa. They work together on issues like trade, transportation, industry, agriculture, and telecommunications.
Why it mattersECOWAS is made up of several institutions, including the Authority of Heads of State and Government, the Council of Ministers, the ECOWAS Parliament, the ECOWAS Court of Justice, and the ECOWAS Commission. The Commission is the principal executive body of ECOWAS.

ChallengesHowever, ECOWAS also faces a number of challenges, including poverty, inequality, and conflict. Nevertheless, ECOWAS remains committed to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in West Africa.
