So, the Pa primary results are in and, as expected, there were a few surprises. I know I am not the only one who was surprised at the turnout for this primary. Man, they had a lot of people vote. However, not all surprises were good. A few of the races were decided by a razor-thin margin with many hanging in the balance.
The biggest surprise of the night was the victory of John Fetterman in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Fetterman, the current lieutenant governor, defeated U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb in a landslide, by more than 20 percentage points. Fetterman will now face Republican Mehmet Oz in the general election and this has many wondering, if Dr. Oz is going to be able to win in November.
Another surprise was the victory of Doug Mastriano in the Republican primary for governor. Mastriano, a state senator who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, defeated former U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta and several other candidates by a comfortable margin.
The results of the Pa primary have set the stage for what is sure to be a very interesting general election. Fetterman and Mastriano are both very different candidates, and their campaigns reflect the deep divisions within the Democratic and Republican parties.
Fetterman is a progressive Democrat who has promised to fight for working families. He has been a vocal critic of President Joe Biden and has called for a more aggressive approach to addressing climate change and economic inequality.
Mastriano, on the other hand, is a conservative Republican who has close ties to Trump. He has embraced Trump's "America First" agenda and has promised to cut taxes, reduce regulations, and build a wall on the US-Mexico border.
The contrast between Fetterman and Mastriano could not be more stark. The general election is sure to be a referendum on the future of Pennsylvania. If Fetterman wins, it will be a sign that the Democratic Party is moving in a more progressive direction. If Mastriano wins, it will be a sign that the Republican Party is doubling down on its commitment to Trumpism.
Either way, the results of the general election will have a profound impact on the future of Pennsylvania. It might even have an impact on the entire nation.
Only time will tell what the future holds. I guess we will have to wait and see.
