Paper or Plastic? Doug Ford's LCBO Bag Ban
By: Norman Green
In a move that has left many Ontarians scratching their heads, Premier Doug Ford has announced plans to ban plastic bags at LCBO stores. The ban, which is set to take effect in July 2023, has sparked a debate about the necessity and effectiveness of such a move.
For those who support the ban, they argue that it will help to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in our environment. Plastic bags are one of the most common forms of litter, and they can take hundreds of years to decompose. They also pose a threat to wildlife, as animals can become entangled in them or ingest them by mistake.
However, critics of the ban say that it is nothing more than a symbolic gesture that will do little to address the larger problem of plastic pollution. They point out that plastic bags only account for a small fraction of the plastic waste that is produced in Ontario each year. They also argue that the ban will simply shift the problem from one area to another, as consumers will simply switch to using paper bags or other reusable containers.
In addition, some critics have raised concerns about the cost of the ban to businesses and consumers. They say that the ban will force businesses to spend more money on paper bags or other reusable containers, and that these costs will ultimately be passed on to consumers.
The LCBO, which is Ontario's government-run liquor store chain, has said that it is committed to reducing its environmental impact. However, the company has not yet said how it will implement the ban or what type of containers it will offer customers to replace plastic bags.
In the meantime, the debate over the ban is likely to continue. Those who support the ban say that it is a necessary step to protect the environment, while critics say that it is a waste of time and money that will do little to address the larger problem of plastic pollution. Ultimately, it is up to the people of Ontario to decide whether or not the ban is worth it.
