The Blog is a critique of the music industry, questioning the ethics and motivations behind the practice of using gay, lesbian, and bisexual artists to create a fan base without delivering on promises of a queer storyline. It deconstructs this practice in its various forms: as band members who are open about their sexuality on social media platforms but never explicitly coming out; as bands that never mention sexuality in interviews but happen to have same-sex couples in their music videos; and as artists who outright tell interviewers that they do not identify as LGBTQ+, but then make headlines after.
This blog is about queerbaiting in music industry. It is a collection of essays that explore what it means to be LGBTQ+ and working in the music industry. Queerbaiting is the intentional use of ambiguous representation to elicit interest, attention, or empathy from a queer person while not intending to ultimately fulfill any of the expectations such representation might create. A new blog that explores the topic of queerbaiting in today's music industry on Unpluggd Media.
