Race in the Media



●Throughout history, various forms of media have always been intertwined with deep-rooted systemic racism

●Racially-biased television and media were extremely prominent during the Civil Rights Movement. However, coverage of demonstrations and interviews of protesters sparked national interest, aiding in the conclusion of the Civil Rights Movement from 1954-1968

○News stations encouraged all races from across all states to stand up and fight for equality and rights

○Television multiplied organization membership - organizations whose goals were to fundamentally change society

○Different forms of media covered interviews, demonstrations, organizations, and updates and information on the movement

○Media became a way of reaching thousands of Americans across the nation and thus making more of an impact at a faster and more efficient rate

●Along with the widespread access of information and reaching out to thousands of Americans, however, came the many forms of media advocating racist ideologies to Americans as well
