 Pierce Butler was born July 11, 1744 in County Carlow Ireland. He was the son of Sir Richard Butler a former memeber of parliament and barionet. In 1771 he married Mary Middleton, they had eight children together.

Butler's schooling is unknown. Because he was unable to inherit his fathers estates he like many others joined the military.
