Rick Bowness
Rick Bowness is a Canadian former professional ice hockey coach and player. He most recently served as the interim head coach of the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Bowness was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, and grew up in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He played junior hockey for the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MJHL) before being drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round, 28th overall, of the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft.
Bowness played 13 seasons in the NHL with the Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, and Washington Capitals. He scored 193 goals and had 203 assists in 794 regular season games. He also appeared in 39 playoff games, scoring 8 goals and adding 10 assists.
After retiring as a player, Bowness began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Bruins in 1984. He later served as head coach of the Jets for 13 seasons, leading the team to two Southeast Division championships and two Eastern Conference Finals appearances.
Bowness was fired by the Jets in 2011 and joined the Bruins as an assistant coach in 2014. He was named interim head coach of the Bruins in 2017 after Bruce Cassidy was fired. Bowness led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2019, but they lost to the St. Louis Blues in seven games.
Bowness was named interim head coach of the Jets in 2021 after Paul Maurice resigned. He led the Jets to a 10-7-3 record in 20 games before being replaced by Dave Lowry.
Bowness is a two-time Jack Adams Award finalist (1999, 2019). He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
