Roscommon crash: local hero dies saving children

On Thursday morning, the community of Roscommon was left in shock and mourning after a local hero lost his life trying to save two children from a burning car.

The incident occurred at around 8:30am on the N61 near Athlone. According to witnesses, a car carrying a family of four veered off the road and crashed into a ditch before bursting into flames.

Without hesitation, a passerby named John Kelly rushed to the scene and attempted to free the children from the wreckage. Tragically, Kelly was unable to save himself and died in the blaze.

The two children, aged 6 and 8, were rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their parents, who were also in the car, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Kelly, a father of two young children, was described by his friends and family as a "kind and selfless" man who would not hesitate to help others.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Garda Superintendent John O'Brien said: "This was a truly tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the victims' families at this difficult time. We want to commend Mr. Kelly for his bravery and selflessness. He risked his life to save others, and his actions undoubtedly saved the lives of the two children."

The local community has been deeply affected by the loss of Kelly, who was a well-known and respected member of the community. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Kelly's family and has already raised over €100,000.

The crash has also raised concerns about the safety of the N61, which has been the site of several fatal accidents in recent years. The Road Safety Authority is now investigating the incident and has called for increased safety measures along the road.

The tragic death of John Kelly is a reminder of the importance of community and the power of ordinary people to make a difference. His bravery and selflessness will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, John Kelly.
