Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide

The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide is an independent inquiry into suicide deaths among serving and former members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The commission was established in July 2021 by the Australian Government and is led by the Honourable Nick Kaldas QC.

The commission's terms of reference are to inquire into:

  • The systemic issues and risk factors relevant to suicide deaths among serving and former members of the ADF
  • The effectiveness of the ADF's current suicide prevention strategies and programs
  • The adequacy of the support services available to serving and former members of the ADF

The commission has conducted public hearings across Australia, heard from hundreds of witnesses, and received thousands of submissions. It is due to deliver its final report to the Australian Government in mid-2023.

The commission's work is vital to understanding the tragic issue of suicide deaths among serving and former members of the ADF. Its findings and recommendations will help to improve the ADF's suicide prevention strategies and programs, and ensure that serving and former members of the ADF have access to the support they need.

The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide is a sensitive and important issue. If you are a serving or former member of the ADF, or you know someone who is, and you are struggling with suicidal thoughts, please know that you are not alone.
