In a recent development that has raised concerns in the region, a Russian submarine has been detected in the West Philippine Sea.
The submarine, reportedly a Kilo-class attack submarine, was spotted about 80 nautical miles west of Cape Calavite in Occidental Mindoro on November 28.
The Philippine Navy, upon detection, immediately dispatched a warship and an aircraft to monitor the submarine's activities.
The presence of a Russian submarine in the West Philippine Sea has raised concerns among Philippine authorities.
"Any intrusion into the West Philippine Sea, of our EEZ [Exclusive Economic Zone], of our baselines, is very worrisome," said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in a statement.
The Philippines has long asserted its sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea, an area also claimed by China and other neighboring countries.
The reasons behind the Russian submarine's presence in the West Philippine Sea remain unclear.
Some analysts speculate that it could be part of a routine patrol or a show of force in the region.
However, the Philippine government has urged Russia to provide an explanation for the submarine's presence.
The incident highlights the growing tensions in the South China Sea, a strategically important waterway that has become a focal point of geopolitical rivalry.
The presence of a Russian submarine in the West Philippine Sea could potentially escalate tensions between China and the Philippines, as well as other countries in the region.
In light of the situation, the Philippine government has called for dialogue and cooperation to resolve the issue.
"We believe that all parties concerned should exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further heighten tensions," said Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.
The international community has also urged all parties involved to engage in peaceful and diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation.
