Saint Peter Released from Prison (Pat Flan Pic)

The liberation of Saint Peter is described in the acts of the apostles in the Bible. This event is described as happening when Peter was imprisoned by the King of the time, Herod. The night before his trial it is said an angel came to him and freed him of his chains. The painting by Benjamin West captures the very moment where this is happening. The piece gives us a view through a crack in a doorway to glimpse at the angel freeing Saint Peter. In the forefront a Roman gaurd lies on the floor in full armour powerless compared to the angel. In the picture the Angel is the single source of light from which all else is illuminated.
