Liverpool have been knocked out of the Premier League title race after a spat between manager Jürgen Klopp and star striker Mohamed Salah.
The Reds drew 2-2 away to West Ham on Sunday (Sept. 27) at the London Stadium in London, England, in the 35th round of the 2023-2024 Premier League season.
The Reds were only able to secure a point from the match, dropping them to third place (22 points, 9 wins, 4 draws, 4 losses, 75 points). They failed to overtake second-place Manchester City (23 points, 7 draws, 3 losses - 76 points), who have played two games less. Leaders Arsenal (24 wins, 5 draws, 5 losses - 77 points) have also played one game less, making it considerably more difficult for Liverpool to overturn the deficit.
The hosts lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation on the day. Alphonse Areola was in goal, while Vladimir Choupoal, Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna, and Emerson Palmieri formed the defense. Edson Alvarez and Tomasz Szczecszek guarded the midfield. Mohamed Cudus, Lucas Paqueta, Jared Bowen, and Mikail Antonio lined up in the second line.
The Reds countered with a 4-3-3 formation. Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Jalil Kwansa, and Trent Alexander-Arnold formed the defense with Alisson Becker in goal. Wataru Endo, Alexis McAllister, and Ryan Hrabenbergh anchored the midfield. Luis Dias and Harvey Elliott on the flanks and Cody Hakpo up front.
Liverpool were unable to pick up the pieces from their 0-2 Merseyside derby defeat to Everton on Sept. 25.
The Reds started the game with Salah on the bench, with Elliot and Bowen exchanging shots in the 11th and 14th minutes.
In the 27th minute, a cut-back pass from Dias was met by Hakbo, who collided with Areola as he tried to shoot. Dias then played a loose ball into the box, where it hit Ogbonna's hand. VAR review ensued and Díaz was called offside first, so no penalty was awarded.
Liverpool also had a chance in the 41st minute when Dias broke down the left flank, but his 토토 shot hit the post.
West Ham, who held on, had the first laugh. Two minutes later, Bowen headed home Cudus' cross from a corner kick to give the Hammers the lead. West Ham went into halftime with the lead.
In the second half, Liverpool quickly equalized. Three minutes into the second half, Dias cut in from the left and played a pass into the box. Robertson stepped forward and finished with a left-footed shot that sent the net reeling.
Liverpool then pulled one back. In the 20th minute of the second half, the ball was played into the back of the net from a corner kick. The ball bounced off the defense and into the back of the net.
Liverpool were again threatened as West Ham countered. In the 31st minute, Alisson failed to get on the end of Antonio's cross. Emerson connected with a left-footed shot in the process, but Alisson made amends for his mistake.
However, West Ham would eventually equalize. In the 32nd minute, Bowen sent in a cross that Antonio finished with a header from inside the box.
Klopp was forced to make a late substitution. Immediately after the goal, Liverpool took off Alexander-Arnold, Dias and Endo and brought on Joe Gomes, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez.
While waiting to be substituted, Salah got into an altercation with Klopp, sparking a controversial scene. After exchanging a few words with Klopp, Salah continued to express his frustration by angrily shouting at him and only stopped when Núñez approached him to stop him.
Liverpool continued to attack, but were unable to find the back of the West Ham net and had to settle for a point.
Speaking to British broadcaster TNT Sports after the game, Klopp dismissed the controversy, saying he “can't speak” about the altercation with Salah, adding, “We've already spoken about it again in the dressing room, it's over.”
