Samson Kandie: A Marathon Legend




Samson Kandie was a Kenyan long-distance runner who made a name for himself in the world of marathons. He was born on April 20, 1971, in the village of Kapsait, Nandi County, Kenya.

Kandie's running career began at an early age. He attended Kapsait High School, where he excelled in both track and field and cross-country. After graduating, he joined the Kenya Police Service and continued to train and compete.

Kandie's breakthrough came in 1998 when he finished third in the Berlin Marathon. This result earned him a spot on the Kenyan team for the 1999 World Championships in Athletics, where he finished 12th.

In 1999, Kandie set his personal best in the marathon at 2:08:31, finishing third in the Berlin Marathon once again. He also won the Vienna Marathon in 2004.

Kandie retired from competitive running in 2005, but he continued to be involved in the sport as a coach and mentor. He passed away on October 4, 2023, at the age of 52.

Kandie was a pioneer for Kenyan distance runners. He was one of the first Kenyans to achieve success in the marathon, and his accomplishments helped to pave the way for the many great Kenyan marathon runners who followed him.
