Seoul snow: The heaviest snowfall in 117 years

Seoul, South Korea – November 27, 2023 – Seoul, the capital of South Korea, experienced its heaviest November snowfall in 117 years on Wednesday. The city was blanketed in a thick layer of snow, causing widespread disruption and transportation chaos.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said that 16.5 centimeters (6.5 inches) of snow fell by 7 am on Wednesday, compared with Seoul's previous record of 12.4 centimeters (4.9 inches) set in 1907.
The snow began falling on Tuesday evening and continued throughout the night. By Wednesday morning, the city was a winter wonderland, with snow-covered trees and buildings.
The heavy snowfall caused widespread disruption to transportation. Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed, and many roads were closed. Public transportation was also affected, with buses and trains running on reduced schedules.
The snow also caused power outages in some parts of the city. According to the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), about 10,000 households were without power as of Wednesday morning.
The heavy snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day. The KMA has issued a heavy snow warning for Seoul and surrounding areas.
Residents urged to stay indoors
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. The city has also deployed snow removal crews to clear the streets and sidewalks.
