Sligo v Galway

The Western Derby
Gaelic Football in the West of Ireland is a way of life. The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) is a sporting organisation that promotes Gaelic games, and is one of the biggest sporting and cultural organisations in Ireland.
Gaelic football is very similar to Australian Rules football. Both games are popular in their respective countries, and when the Irish play the Aussies on home soil they often play International Rules football. Basically it is a hybrid of the two sports.
Anyway, back to Gaelic Football. Sligo and Galway are two counties based in the West of Ireland, and they have a fierce rivalry. The games are passionate affairs, with sold out stadiums and all the drama you would expect from a top sporting event.
My Experience
I have been lucky enough to attend a few of these games, and the atmosphere is electric. The fans are passionate, and the players are top class. The games are always close, and it is often not until the final whistle that the winner is decided.
One game that stands out in my memory was a match between Sligo and Galway in the Connacht Championship in 2010. Sligo were the underdogs, but they played with great heart and determination. In the end, they won the game by a single point.
Some of the key facts about the rivalry:
  • The first game between Sligo and Galway was played in 1888.
  • Galway have won the most games, with Sligo winning 33 times.
  • The two counties have met in the Connacht final 24 times.
  • The rivalry is one of the most passionate in Gaelic football.
The Future of the Rivalry
The rivalry between Sligo and Galway is sure to continue for many years to come. The two counties are proud of their Gaelic football tradition, and the fans are passionate about their teams.

I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to attend a game between Sligo and Galway to do so. It is an experience that you will never forget.
